Wide-screen LCD Monitors Dominate The China PC Monitor Market in 3Q07, says IDC
Source: IDC China Date: 2008-01-15
Beijing, 15 January, 2008--According to IDC's Asia/Pacific Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker (3Q 2007), total shipments of PC monitors in China in 3Q 2007 were 8.26 million units, recording a 1.0% sequential growth, and a 17.7% year-on-year increase.
Fiona Wu, Market Analyst at IDC's China Computing Systems Research, highlighted that the proportion of wide-screen LCDs in 3Q 2007 reached 55.0% of total LCDs, an increase of 8.8 percentage points over 2Q 2007. Another notable trend during the quarter was the increasing popularity of 19in. and larger wide-screen LCDs. Meanwhile, migration from CRT to LCDs continued with the growing availability of smaller wide-screen LCD monitors in the 15 and 17in. sizes.
Some findings of the PC monitor market in 3Q 2007 are summarized below:
1. 19W LCD monitor was the most popular size in 3Q 2007, overtaking the 17in. 4:3 LCD. Due to falling prices, the 19W captured 51.2% of the non-bundled LCD market. Meanwhile, the 20W posted a stronger than expected sequential growth of 24.1%, as vendors promoted this size due to shortages of the 19W. Vendors also continued to expand their range of models within the larger/wide-screen LCD form factors, as falling prices made both 22W and 24W monitors more popular in 3Q 2007.
2. The market share of 17W LCDs decreased over the previous quarter, and some vendors are planning to discontinue products in this size in the upcoming quarters. Larger screen LCD monitors are proving to be more popular instead, as vendors promote these models to encourage buyers to switch from CRT to LCD. Although the 15W is a relatively new size, many vendors will promote this size in order to target the cost-sensitive group of former CRT users.
3. With the gradual acceptance of wide-screen monitors in the commercial market, and narrowing price gap between wide-screen and 4:3 products, vendors are starting to push wide-screen models in the commercial space. IDC predicts wide-screen monitors to account for 50.0% of all LCD sales in 2007, and eventually account for 83.8% of total LCD sales by 2011.
